Everyone holds their own views, but it's sometimes better to keep them to ourselves.
A 76-year-old style icon recently posted a picture of herself showcasing a sleeveless midi dress. While the post received numerous comments, not all of them were positive.
"I've experienced this before, but this one caught me off guard," Candace Cima shared with TODAY. "People still hold onto outdated ideas about what's appropriate for age in fashion, and that needs to evolve."
Cima, a grandmother to 11 grandchildren, flaunted a brown knit sleeveless dress complemented by a sweater.
"Some comments were less than supportive. 'This dress doesn't flatter your figure from the side and back. A snug fit below the waist isn't your best choice. Appreciate everything else about your body!'" read one Facebook comment.
"Not a fan of the dress with the sweater," another person remarked.
"It's not flattering. I would never wear it alone. At your age, it's inappropriate to show that much skin," another boldly commented.
"It's perfectly natural to have wrinkles at 76, and I'm not embarrassed by them," Cima responded. "Sometimes, I'm tempted to ask, 'Should I hide my face as well because it has wrinkles too?'"
Cima launched her fashion blog in 2019, recognizing a gap in representation for older women in the fashion industry.
"I noticed an opportunity to discuss dressing gracefully as one ages. Women have been conditioned to believe they should hide their bodies because that's what their mothers and grandmothers did."
"We need to change our perspective on aging. We don't have to conform to these outdated beliefs in a contemporary world."
Despite the numerous negative comments, Cima didn't dwell on them and instead shared words of wisdom for her younger followers.
"Getting older is wonderful. Everything you've learned throughout your life is now at your disposal. You're now the wisest you'll ever be. Embrace it and wear it proudly."
