A woman recently shared her experience on Reddit, revealing that her fiancé expected her to cover the restaurant bill for him and his friends, mocking her because she earned more money than him.
The woman, a 33-year-old, said, "I've been engaged to my fiancé, who is 37, for 5 months. We keep our finances separate as per his preference. After receiving a 30% raise, I now earn more than him. I've noticed he's been leveraging this to ask me to pay for his and his friends' meals. Whenever I decline or question this, he retorts with comments like, 'Because of the 30% increase,' implying I don't deserve it."
She mentioned that he had previously deceived her into paying for meals by publicly asking her, knowing she would find it hard to refuse. "He's tricked me into paying for his and his friends' meals several times by asking me in public. I'm too polite to decline, especially in a public setting like a restaurant, so I usually just pay up. Last Tuesday, when he invited me to dinner with his friends, I made it clear from the beginning that I wouldn't be footing the bill. He assured me, saying, 'I've got this,' and 'Don't worry.'"
However, during the meal, her fiancé whispered to her that she would be paying, to which she firmly responded with a whispered "no." "We arrived at the restaurant, met his friends, and placed our orders. Midway through the meal, he leaned in and whispered that I'd be covering the costs for everyone. I was infuriated and whispered back, 'No,' but he likely assumed I wouldn't cause a scene in front of his friends and the public, and insisted, 'You earn enough, remember? The 30% increase?'"
Feeling angry, she paid only her portion of the bill and discreetly left the restaurant. "I was boiling with anger. Instead of reacting angrily, I waited for the bills to arrive (they were already split from the beginning) and paid only for my meal. I then excused myself to the restroom, sneaked out, got into my car, and went home."
Her fiancé subsequently called and texted her, wondering where she had gone. She explained her actions, saying, "I began receiving calls and texts from my fiancé, asking where I was. I responded, expressing my displeasure with how he had manipulated me into paying for his and his friends' meals. I informed him that I had gone home and then stopped responding."
Later, she revealed that they had a heated argument over the issue. "An hour later, he came over and began shouting at me, calling me selfish, irrational, miserly, and childish for leaving him with a bill he couldn't cover (he had to call his brother for help). We had a loud argument, after which he stormed out. His friends didn't comment on the situation, but he told me they were disappointed in my behavior and advised him to 'reflect' on the kind of woman he is going to marry."
