Heather Unbehaun, accused of abducting her daughter from an Illinois suburb six years ago, has surrendered, bringing a widely followed case to a close. She is currently held at the Kane County Adult Justice Center in Illinois, facing abduction charges without the possibility of bail.
Recently, Kayla Unbehaun was found safe in North Carolina just days before her mother’s surrender and has since been reunited with her custodial father. Heather Unbehaun was arrested in North Carolina on a fugitive warrant issued by Illinois authorities for charges of kidnapping and child abduction. Initially detained on a $250,000 bond, she was released after posting bail on Tuesday, as confirmed by Asheville Police Department spokesperson Samantha Booth.
Kayla was abducted on July 4, 2017, after a parade in South Elgin, Illinois. Heather had told Kayla’s father, Ryan Iserka, that they were going camping but never returned. A felony warrant was subsequently issued for Heather’s arrest.
The case saw a breakthrough when someone in Asheville recognized Kayla from the Netflix series “Unsolved Mysteries” and alerted authorities.
Ryan Iserka expressed gratitude to law enforcement officials and supporters for their efforts in reuniting him with Kayla. Heather Unbehaun is scheduled to appear in court next on Wednesday morning at the Kane County Judicial Center.
