Donald Trump’s return to the presidency has been anything but quiet. His second term has been marked by a series of dramatic executive orders, legal battles, and polarizing decisions that have left little room for neutrality—people either fiercely support him or vehemently oppose him.
One of the most vocal critics of the Trump administration is veteran Democratic strategist James Carville. Known for his sharp political insights, Carville has repeatedly predicted the collapse of Trump’s administration—something he believes is already underway.

In recent comments, Carville highlighted a sharp drop in Trump’s approval ratings, claiming they’ve plummeted from the low 50s to the upper 30s. He attributes this decline in part to the president’s executive orders and the actions of the Department of Government Efficiency, now led by tech billionaire Elon Musk. Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting strategies have sparked widespread debate.
“It’s collapsing right now. We’re in the midst of a collapse,” Carville said during an appearance on The Dan Abrams Show. “What I have said very publicly is that Democrats need to play possum. This whole thing is collapsing.”

Carville's most scathing criticism came in response to Trump’s recent announcement of sweeping new tariffs. The administration unveiled a new round of tariffs on imports from nearly every country, including a 125% tariff on goods from China. Trump called it “Liberation Day,” describing the move as a “declaration of economic independence.”
Carville, however, did not mince words. In an op-ed for The New York Times, he condemned the policy as “one of the most ignorant acts of political leadership in American history.”

“Not only was this an act of economic warfare,” he wrote, “it has broken the cardinal rule in American politics: Never destabilize the economy. With it, the Trump administration is causing enormous damage to itself – and there can be no more distraction from this naked truth.”
Trump, never one to shy away from criticism, fired back on Truth Social, calling Carville a “loser” who can’t accept the president’s supposedly strong polling numbers.
